Several Tulip City Athletes will make the trip to the famous Blue Oval in Des Moines this week after qualifying for the 110th annual Drake Relays.
As has become tradition, Pella High School will be well represented. From the boys team, throwers Nick DeJong and Mason Huerter qualified for the shot put, and DeJong and Kody Huisman in the discus. Jordan Buma will also compete in the 110 Hurdles, as will the boys 4×100 meter relay (Gabe Thomas, Xavion Huizinga, Ben Jablonski, Derek Hackman, and alternate-Jordan Buma). For the Lady Dutch, it’s another large group they are sending as well, starting with individuals Metsje Miller in the 100 meters and Elsie Thoreson in the 400 meter hurdles. The girls are sending relays in the 4×100, 4×200, and 4×400 as well.
The Pela girls 4×100 consisted of Metsje Miller, Maggie Renaud, Evie Armstrong and Roselande Vanderhoff. They’ll be joined on the relay by Emily McMartin and Andrea VanHeukelom to fill the 6 roster spots allowed by the Drake Relays. The 4×200 had Metsje Miller, Calla Kerndt, Roselande Vanderhoff, and Evie Armstrong. Elsie Thoreson and Isabel Treimer complete the relay team as the alternates.
Newton’s meet is where the qualification of the third relay, the 4×400, hit their mark. Ashley Blommers, Emily Holterhaus, Elsie Thoreson, and Caroline McMartin ran a season best 4:10.04 to take first place and win a spot on the last night of qualifying. Lindsey Blommers and Evie Armstrong round out that roster.
Pella Christian is sending two throwers to the relays — Blake Veenstra in the discus, and Allison Van Gorp in the shot put. Additionally, the Eagles girls 4×100 relay team is also heading to the Blue Oval at Drake Stadium. Those athletes include Erica Nikkel, Chloe Morgan, Mary Kate Bandstra, and Avey Amelse, and alternates Morgan Fopma and Kayla Natelborg. Stay tuned to 92.1 KRLS for continuing coverage.
