Athletes from Pella and Pella Christian are splitting duties today — with a group heading to the 110th Drake Relays, and the rest staying home for a track meet at Pella High School.
Pella High Throwers Nick DeJong, Mason Huerter, and Kody Huisman and hurdler Jordan Buma as well as the boys 4×100 meter relay Gabe Thomas, Xavion Huizinga, Ben Jablonski, and Derek Hackman will compete this weekend at the famous Blue Oval. For the Lady Dutch, it’s another large group they are sending as well, starting with individuals Metsje Miller in the 100 meters and Elsie Thoreson in the 400 meter hurdles. The girls are sending relays in the 4×100, 4×200, and 4×400 as well, which includes Miller, Thoreson, Maggie Renaud, Evie Armstrong, Roselande Vanderhoff, Emily McMartin, Isabel Treimer, Andrea VanHeukelom, Calla Kerndt, Caroline McMartin, Ashley Blommers, and Emily Holterhaus. Miller says the long-term goal of the team is to be peaking by state qualifying, regardless of where they run.
Pella Christian is sending two throwers to the relays — Blake Veenstra in the discus, and Allison Van Gorp in the shot put. Additionally, the Eagles girls 4×100 relay team of Erica Nikkel, Chloe Morgan, Mary Kate Bandstra, and Avey Amelse, and alternates Morgan Fopma and Kayla Natelborg is also making the trip.
Tonight, the Pella and Pella Christian teams remaining in the Tulip City will head to Pella High School this evening.
