Pella’s boys and girls each placed 2nd at the Tulip Time Relays Thursday. Both teams were limited, in part, due to the Drake Relays, but several members of both squads had 1st place finishes.
The Lady Dutch scored 149.5 team points despite a shorthanded roster, and had Emily McMartin (12.77) and Evie Armstrong (13.32) finishing 1-2 in the 100 meter dash, Calla Kerndt winning the open 200 (27.57), Ellie Roorda claiming the 3000 meter run (11:58.47), and Elly Cairney throwing the best discus of the evening (124-08.5) in individual events. Pella had the fastest 4×800 relay (Tirzah Wittenberg, Makayla Kruse, Abby Cutler, Chelsea Jorgensen – 10:22.99) and Distance Medley relay (Metsje Miller, Roselande Vanderhoff, Elsie Thoreson, Caroline McMartin – 4:16.87).
Pella’s boys were without their two top shot put throwers — Nick DeJong and Mason Huerter, who were at the Drake Relays, but still scored 133 points, earning a 1-2 finish with a pair of sub two-minute 800 meter runs from Tony Schmitz (1:59.63) and Josiah Wittenberg (1:59.91). Pella’s 4×400 relay (Gabe Thomas, Nolan Clayberg, Karl Miller, David Schouten – 3:37.02) and 4×800 relay (Schmitz, Drew Van Hauen, Karl Miller, Wittenberg – 8:16.50) won their races.
Pella Christian also competed at the Tulip Time Relays, missing most of their seniors to the annual class trip and Drake Relays. However, Pella Christian had 1st place wins in the 4×100 (52.77) and 4×200 (1:52.04) relays with the same group of four, made up of Erica Nikkel, Chloe Morgan, Kayla Natelborg, and Avey Amelse. Annaliese Admiraal placed 2nd in the 1500 meters (5:40.3). The Eagles boys best finish came in the sprint medley, with the group of Cody Boender, Max Wichhart, Levi Schelhaas, and Bryant Agre placing 2nd (1:41.10).
