Students from Pleasantville got some important lessons in safety while visiting the FFA’s farm this week; and the topics they covered weren’t just farming related.

Fourth and fifth graders toured the farm during Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig’s visit to Pleasantville on Wednesday; they were there to learn about farm safety and other safety topics from the FFA members on hand.

Josie Houser from the FFA tells KNIA/KRLS News this is useful information for children to know, even if they don’t live on or regularly visit a farm.

“It’s very important to learn anything from farm safety, with your tractor or lawn mower or even being in a boat. Even if you don’t grow up on a farm, you will probably end up on a lawn mower or driving behind someone in a tractor, or just going fishing in a boat or even not fishing but just being in a boat,” Josie says.

The visiting classes were broken up into small groups, and went from station to station to learn about various aspects of safety; they ranged from dealing with tractors, horses and ATVs to boating and watching for common hazards on a farm.

They also learned about what to do if they should encounter fireworks or guns; they learned about the risks associated with each, and to not handle them without adult supervision.
