Voters in Melcher-Dallas will have the chance to vote today on a referendum which would expand the use of Local Option Sales Tax revenue.

A special election features a referendum which would authorize the city to use the one percent sales tax revenue for uses other than road work; right now, 100 percent of all funds collected through LOST goes to road maintenance uses.

If approved, the city would be allowed to use those funds to tear down several derelict buildings; City Council members say if the measure is rejected by voters, they would have to take out a loan to demolish the buildings, and this would be more costly for taxpayers.

The polls are open from noon to 8:00 p.m. at the Community Center in Melcher-Dallas.
