Adding 22 points to its team score Saturday, the Central College women’s track and field team finished in fifth place at the American Rivers Conference outdoor track and field championships. Central finished with 68 total points. Successfully defending her title, Central College women’s track and field athlete Mary Gray was the heptathlon champion. Teammate Kiki Pingel of Pella was second with 4,230 points, just eight behind Gray’s winning total of 4,238. Both of Central’s finalists in the 400-meter hurdles improved by one spot from their qualifying position. Pingel dropped .60 seconds from her time and placed fifth while Lynzie Miller saved .64 seconds and took seventh. Pingel and Miller ran the first and third legs of the 4×400-meter relay team with Sarah Christopher and Mary Gray, finishing fourth in 3:59.72. A select few Central athletes will compete in last chance meets next week at undetermined sites in an effort to qualify for the national meet.
