The Little Panther Relays will be run on Saturday, May 25th and kids from around the Knoxville area and other parts of the state will be getting a chance to compete on the Memorial Day weekend.
The meet will be at the Knoxville High School track, and competitors up to age 14 are invited to take part. Athletes will be split into one of five age classes; track events rage up to the 800 meter run, while field events include the long jump, high jump, shot put and discus.
Joe Cunningham has organized this meet for fifteen years, and competition resumes after a one-year hiatus. He tells KNIA/KRLS News while some of the kids belong to track and field clubs, others will be taking the opportunity to try out the sport for the first time.
“You have a lot of kids who have never done a track meet; that’s one of our targets, we want to expose kids to it. It’s a sport that I love and I want to see kids get into. And then of course there’s kids that really do several meets a year from and will be from track clubs that come and participate,” Cunningham says.
Registrations can be taken on the day of the meet from 9:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. The cost is $20 per child.
