Knoxville residents will be paying tribute this weekend to those who have given their lives in defense of our country.

The Avenue of Flags is on display throughout the weekend; due to heavy rain, the placement of the flags and the opening ceremony at Graceland Cemetery had to be delayed to Saturday morning at 8:00 o’clock. Smaller flags are also adorning the gravestones of those who served.

Sunday will include a special tribute, as 15 veterans have been selected to receive Quilts of Valor; these handmade quilts will be presented to them during ceremonies at 1:30 p.m. in the commons at Knoxville High School.

VFW Post 5242 and American Legion Post 89 in Pella are co-hosting the annual Memorial Day remembrance ceremony on Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Pella Memorial Building.

Pleasantville will host a celebration and remembrance program on Sunday evening, to honor active military and veterans who have passed on in the last year.

It will be held in the Pleasantville Christian Church Sanctuary at 7:30 p.m. Family members and other loved ones who have passed away during the last year will also be honored.

On Monday there will be ceremonies at two area cemeteries, the Bellefontaine Cemetery in Tracy and the Columbia Cemetery south of Columbia. Both will begin at 10:00 a.m.
