Students in Knoxville’s elementary schools are getting a taste of what their new classes will be like in the fall, as they get to move up a notch for one day.

Tuesday marks Step Up Day; for this day, students get to spend time in their next grade-level classes to get a feel for what they will be like when the new school year comes around.

Ryan Klein is principal at West Elementary; he tells KNIA/KRLS News it’s helpful for younger students who may find moving into a new classroom a bit intimidating.

“It can be, and that’s why I think Step Up Day is super-important to start building those relationships and get them familiar and comfortable with teachers and classmates in that setting, before they even have to jump into it next year,” Klein says.

This will include students from the nearby Stepping Stones day care center going across the way to West, and Klein says it’s especially important for these youngest children to have an idea of what their new school will be like.
