Among the Marion County participants at this weekend’s Special Olympics State Summer Games is one double gold medalist…and one team which won with a big comeback.
Michelle Turnage took two track and field gold medals on Friday at Hilton Coliseum on the campus of Iowa State University. She won for the javelin throw, and the 50 meter dash.
Meanwhile, the 4x100m Unified Relay Team pulled out a come-from-behind win to earn the gold medal; Grace Irving (pictured, far right) ran the anchor leg, started out 15 meters behind and wound up winning by 30 meters. She claims the gold along with Stacia Mason, Joe Morgan and A.J. Bull.
Other competitors at the State Games include Ben Heywood, Jacob Hindman, Charlie Leavitt, Cameron Cross, Marissa Schletzbaum and Shawn Barker from Carlisle. We’ll have more results to come from the Iowa Special Olympics Summer Games.
