All residents who plan to renew or update their drivers licenses are reminded to bring extra forms of identification to receive a real ID ahead of next year’s deadline. Marion County Treasurer Michaela Bigaouette says October 1st, 2020 is approaching faster than many may think, as those who want access to federal buildings or fly domestically will need a real ID, which is a form of identification meeting increased security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards. She says while many people have come to their office dismissing the idea because they don’t fly, she says there are many critical functions that rely on access to federal buildings. Those who don’t have a gold star on their license will need a passport to gain access to those facilities or to fly in the United States. Anyone seeking a real ID will need to bring documents proving identity and date of birth, their social security number, and Iowa residence and residential address. There is no additional cost to getting the gold star on a license.
