Pella residents have a more secure way of depositing unused or expired prescription drugs. Lt. Bret Haupert says the Pella Police Department now has a drop box in the main lobby of the department’s entrance off of Liberty and Main Street.

“The drug drop box is specifically designed for prescription drugs,” he says. “In our community, we often see individual trying to obtain prescription drugs illegally, and we’re trying to put a stop to that. So, what citizens of Pella can do is come into the police department, drop off their unwanted or unused prescription drugs in the drop box, no questions asked, completely anonymous, and we will take care of them from there.”

He says by doing disposing of the unwanted drugs, they are helping prevent those prescriptions from falling into the wrong hands.

“Legal prescription drugs can be abused like any illegal, illicit drugs,” he says. “Commonly, you find the opioids that everybody’s been hearing about lately, in possession of people who are illegally using drugs
