The Knoxville Police Department would like to remind residents to be aware of a new type of phone scam. A citizen recently reported that she had received a phone call from her satellite TV company requesting information and wanting to upgrade her service. The phone number shown on the women’s caller ID was the business phone number of her satelite company. The victim reported the caller knew information about her account as well. The victim found out the call was a scam after she became suspicious and called the business directly. Chief Dan Losada tells KNIA/KRLS News the first thing people should do if they suspect a call is a scam is to block the number. He says the second thing people should do if they feel they have given too much information is to contact their financial institution. Chief Losada adds, if the call has an offer that seems too good to be true, that’s usually a sign you are being scammed.
