The tainter gates were closed Friday morning and the Red Rock Dam’s outflow was switched to the sluice gates–those located below the water level of the dam, due to decreasing lake level and inflows. As a result, the restricted zone on the lake 1/2 mile from the dam has been removed, according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. There is still a restricted area by the dam’s forebay, approximately 600 feet from the gates. Howell Station Campground, Ivans Campground, South Tailwater Recreation Area and Howell Station Landing are open at this time. Boat ramps that are currently usable for lake access include those at the Whitebreast Recreation Area, Marina Cove and Elk Rock State Park. All other boat ramps are closed due to high water levels. The North Tailwater Recreation Area continues to be closed due to construction on the hydropower project. The lake crested at approximately 775.1 feet above sea level, or 33 feet above normal pool, which was a top ten all-time mark at the lake. Levels have dropped by 10 feet over the past two weeks due to the increased outflow.
