A record-breaking period of precipitation since June of 2018 will hopefully give way to more normal conditions, according to State Climatologist Justin Glisan. He says the last twelve months in Iowa have been the wettest since 1895, when looking at records of specific twelve month periods. Historic flooding out west earlier this spring and widespread flooding in the rest of the state in May came after months of above average rainfall and one of the snowiest winters on record, Glisan says. Long-term outlooks indicate equal chances of above or below average precipitation when looking at the rest of the summer and fall, according to the National Weather Service. An updated outlook will be released Thursday. Hear more about Iowa’s weather with Glisan on today’s In Depth with Dr. Bob Leonard.
