Tomorrow is the 4th of July and with that means fireworks and family barbecues. The Marion County Public Health Department would like to remind residents to stay safe while cooking during those family get togethers. Nurse Judi Van Hulzen with the department tells KNIA/KRLS News one helpful tip to keep everyone enjoying the 4th of July is invest in a meat thermometer. She says keeping foods in separate coolers away from drinks is always a smart decision as well as making sure to clean cooking utensils and countertops properly when prepping for the meal.

Van Hulzen says hamburgers and ground beef should be cooked to 160 degrees, poultry and precooked meats like hotdogs to 165 degrees and whole cuts of beef and pork to 145 degrees as well as fish. Van Hulzen says cooking to the recommended temperature is the best way to keep from getting sick during the family barbecue.
