While the Eagles pitchers weren’t sharp and the runners weren’t coming home to score like they have lately, Pella Christian’s baseball team was able to survive and advance in the 2A district playoffs with a 4-2 win over Union, as heard live on 92.1 KRLS. The Eagles jumped out of the gates swinging, with Dan Jungling’s first career extra base hit knocking in the first tally and a two-run double by Devin Haveman giving P.C. a 3-0 lead after one. Momentum turned in the 2nd when the Eagles left the bases loaded on offense, and Union started to take advantage of Pella Christian pitching mistakes and two key defensive errors. Union scored two unearned runs in the 4th and 5th innings to pull within one, and in the top of the 6th, the Knights had the tying run at second base. A relay from Jungling to Matthew Bokhoven to Lawson Bruxvoort cut down the tying run from scoring on a two-out single. Pella Christian would add insurance on a two-out base knock from Webster in the bottom of the 6th, before Devin Haveman struck out the side with the tying run at 1st base in the 7th to complete the three inning save. Pella Christian improves to 15-14 and has a showdown looming with PCM Tuesday in State Center in game one of the District Baseball semifinals doubleheader, with East and West Marshall clashing in the nightcap. Hear the Eagles and Mustangs Tuesday at 5 p.m., with pregame at 4:45, on 92.1 KRLS.
