The first major step of a new municipal telecommunications utility in Pella was given the green light at the most recent Pella City Council meeting this past Tuesday. City Administrator Mike Nardini says a $792,000 engineering services contract was approved with NewCom Technologies. Nardini says the estimated fees include design of the entire fiber optic network in the city limits, covering 70 miles of ground, as well as construction supervision and design of the central office for the utility. The design of the network will take until December, when the city anticipates taking the project out for bids, with the goal of starting construction in spring of 2020. If all aspects of the development of the telecommunications utility remain on schedule, the first customers will have service in play in early 2021.
