Widespread power outages and damage were the results of several severe thunderstorms impacting Marion and Warren Counties Saturday. The KNIA/KRLS Severe Weather Action Team was on for two rounds of warnings from 5:20 to 6:45 and 7:10 to 8:00, with six staff members contributing to live coverage and Weatherology providing updates. Widespread tree damage was reported in Knoxville, with winds topping out at 68 miles per hour. Tree damage was reported by the Iowa DOT along Highway 92 in Indianola as well. A power outage impacted hundreds of customers in Marion County for several hours as well. A tree came down on a pickup at Howell Station Campground at Lake Red Rock, with several first responders rushing to the scene to rescue a man believed to be trapped inside. The individual did not suffer any injuries. Pella Fire, Pella Ambulance, and the Marion County Sheriff’s Office responded. Witnesses say the man was knocked to the ground as the tree came down, and he was disoriented but otherwise okay. Rainfall also impacted several events, including cancellation of the Knoxville Races. The KNIA/KRLS Severe Weather Action Team is on the air with live coverage for any tornado or severe thunderstorm warning for any portion of Marion or Warren Counties, with backup generators ensuring the coverage stays on if the power goes out.
