A 2-0 victory by the Central College men’s soccer team over the University of the Ozarks Sunday afternoon was a milestone victory for longtime head coach Garry Laidlaw. The Dutch (2-0-0) scored both goals in the first half to down the Eagles (0-1-1). In his 22nd year with the Dutch, Laidlaw has been at the helm for 200 of the program’s 222 wins. He has a career record of 200-174-18 (.533) and been named the conference coach of the year three times. Central will finish its three game home stand Wednesday, hosting the University of Northwestern-St. Paul (Minn.) (0-1-0) at 3 p.m.
The Central College volleyball team broke even on its west coast trip by bagging two wins on the final day of the Oregon Trail Classic against Linfeld College (Ore.) and Lewis & Clark College (Ore.). After being defeated twice on Friday, Central took down Linfield 25-16, 25-19, 25-22 in the first match of the day. Central beat the Pioneers 23-25, 26-24, 25-22, 25-21. The Dutch (2-2) will play in a tournament at Macalaster College in St. Paul, Minnesota next weekend.
After spending the spring semester studying abroad, the top player for the Central College women’s tennis team helped the team to a 9-0 win over Monmouth College Saturday. Playing with split squads, a different group of Dutch (1-1) players lost to St. Ambrose University 5-4 in Moline, Illinois. Schilling wasted no time getting back in the win column against Monmouth, taking the No. 1 doubles match 8-5 with Laurynn Mize (before winning her No. 1 singles match 6-3, 6-1. In Moline, a younger crew of players won two out of three doubles matches, but couldn’t get the fifth point in a 5-4 loss against the Fighting Bees. Alex Griggs earned a singles victory at No. 4 for Central.
A hat trick from Erin Manion (senior, forward, Delafield, Wis., Kettle Moraine HS) accounted for one-third of the Central College women’s soccer team’s offense in a 9-0 shellacking of Wisconsin Lutheran College Saturday It was the biggest margin of victory for coach Mike Kobylinski and the Dutch (1-0) since beating Crown College (Minn.) by the same 9-0 margin on September 10, 2016. In today’s game, a former All-District and All-Conference Lady Dutch soccer player will have a homecoming of sorts. Erica Bossard, who is a sophomore at Monmouth, will travel to the Tulip City today to take on Central’s Women’s Team. Bossard was a key member of the 2018 Lady Dutch soccer team that qualified for state and finished in the semifinals. Central welcomes Monmouth today at 5 p.m. at the Kuyper Athletics Complex.
