Area residents have just over a year before the federal Real ID act will go into effect. Beginning on October 1st, 2020, residents must have an officially-recognized ID card to fly commercially or gain entry on to federal property. Drivers licenses which are compliant with Real ID resemble a normal license; the only difference is a yellow star insignia imprinted on the card, which tells authorities the bearer’s identification has been verified. To obtain a Real ID certain documentation must be provided to establish your identity. Forms of documentation include a valid passport or an authenticated birth certificate, a valid Social Security card, a W-2 or a 1099 form with the Social Security number on it and a bill or bank statement with your local address. Marion County Treasurer Michaela Bigaouette tells KNIA/KRLS News she is encouraging people to bring documents in now to obtain a Real ID with renewal of their license but if they are unable now, they can always obtain a Real ID at a later time for $10. The Real ID law was adopted as an anti-terrorism measure after 9/11, and is also intended to help cut down on identity theft.
