Third-ranked Van Meter racked up 311 rushing yards and six touchdowns on the ground in a 40-6 win over number seven Pella Christian as heard live on the KRLS2 stream at www.kniakrls.com.
Trailing 20-0 at halftime, the Eagles put together their best drive of the game to start the third quarter as Jase Amelse punched in a four-yard touchdown to cap off a 12-play 62-yard drive. But the Bulldogs answered with two scores in less than four minutes to put the game on ice.
Assistant Pella Christian coach Verlan Nikkel says that despite being 0-2, the mood with the team remains optimistic.
“We’ve got to keep the kids’ spirits up and let them know that we still believe in them and that we can get better and we’re a good football team. That was the message that Coach Kac gave to them afterward, and we’re going to come back Monday ready to work again and get better.”
Statistically, Amelse led the Eagles with 11 carries and 56 yards. Keean Cadwell caught five passes for 32 yards. Amelse also topped the tackle charts with 13.
Up next for Pella Christian is another home game next Friday against Iowa City Regina.
