Blaine Hawkins threw a Central College record six touchdown passes Saturday in a 42-12 season opening victory over Northwestern of Minnesota as heard live on 92.1 KRLS.
Defensive lineman Matt Glockel intercepted an Eagles pass on the first drive of the game, leading to a Hawkins scoring toss to Hunter Robinson.
The Dutch offense sputtered on its next two possessions, but then scored five straight times in the second and third quarters to put the game on ice. When Hawkins went to the bench for good in the middle of the third, he’d completed 24-of-33 passes for 299 yards and the six scores, breaking a school record of five first set by Chris Nelson in 1972, and tied in each of the last three years – by Riley Gray in 2016 and Hawkins in each of the last two seasons.
Robinson caught eight passes for 78 yards and two touchdowns, Tanner Schmeinke grabbed seven balls for 110 yards and two scores, and tight end Ross Norem had the other two TD receptions, totalling three catches for 25 yards.
