The numbers continued to pile up and the records fall as Central College flexed a big-play offense in 52-33 homecoming football crowd-pleaser over Loras College Saturday, heard live on 92.1 KRLS. Improving to 3-0 overall in their American Rivers opener, the Dutch rolled up 569 yards total offense. Quarterback Blaine Hawkins matched his three-week-old school record with six TD passes. Central makes its first road appearance next Saturday, traveling to Decorah to take on Luther College in a 1 p.m. league game.
Opening up the American Rivers Conference season with a bang, the Central College men’s soccer team defeated No. 8 Luther College 2-1 Saturday night. The Dutch got their first win over Luther since 2012 and first win in Decorah since 2010. Forward Charlie Pritchard tallied both goals for the Dutch, striking in the sixth and 23rd minutes. The victory comes on the heels of Central’s first defeat of the season, a 2-1 decision at Carleton College (Minn.) on Tuesday. The road doesn’t get any easier for Central as No. 13 Loras College comes to Pella next Saturday for a 3:30 p.m. match at the A.N. Kuyper Athletics Complex.
Playing at the Nebraska Wesleyan Invitational Saturday, the Central College volleyball team swept Johnson & Wales University (Colo.) 3-0 before being swept by the University of Wisconsin – Platteville. The Dutch (13-5) rebounded from Thursday’s loss against Buena Vista University by defeating the Wildcats. Central will be back in Lincoln next Thursday for a 7:30 p.m. American Rivers Conference match against the Prairie Wolves.
Winning all three doubles matches in duals against Nebraska Wesleyan University and Buena Vista University sparked victories over both schools for the Central College women’s tennis team Saturday. The Dutch (4-4, 3-2 in A-R-C) were able to beat the Prairie Wolves (1-4, 1-4 A-R-C) 8-1 and the Beavers (0-9, 0-6 A-R-C) 9-0. Central’s No. 1 doubles team of Bronwyn Metcalf of Pella and Maddie Hartley won 8-4 in both matches. Central will host Luther College at 4 p.m. next Friday and Wartburg College at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
