Seeing its undefeated record whisked away in a flurry of mistakes on a wind-swept afternoon, the Central College football team stumbled through a 28-7 setback to the University of Dubuque Saturday, heard live on 92.1 KRLS. Five interceptions, seven penalties and a miniscule 20:27 of possession time in the 60-minute contest resulted in the first loss in five outings for the No. 23-ranked Dutch (4-1 overall, 2-1 American Rivers). Dubuque (3-3 overall, 2-1 conference). Central was outgained 336 yards to 227.
Completing a 5-0 run at the American Rivers Conference individual championships, Central College women’s tennis player Sarah Behrens (junior, Red Oak) secured the C-Flight singles championship. It’s the second time in three years Central has won the C-Flight title, Kirsten Jordan was the champion in 2017. Behrens needed three sets to win both of her matches, starting with a 6-3, 3-6, 10-8 win over Loras College’s Marianna Bayona Paez in the semifinal.
Ending a frustrating four-game losing streak, the Central College women’s soccer team notched a 1-1 tie against the University of Dubuque on Saturday. The tie gives the Dutch (5-6-2, 0-3-1 American Rivers Conference) their first point in the conference standings. It was the Spartans (9-3-1, 2-1-1 conference) first tie of the season.
The Central College men’s soccer team could never find its grove in a 2-0 loss against the University of Dubuque on Saturday afternoon. The Dutch (10-2-2, 2-1-1 A-R-C) outshot the Spartans (9-3-1, 4-0-0 A-R-C) 12-8 and had more shots on frame (5-4) but the Spartans converted twice and the Dutch couldn’t find the back of the net.
