While it’s felt a lot more like autumn over the past several days, the changing of the leaves remains a bit behind schedule for peak season. According to this week’s Iowa DNR Fall Colors Report, colors are starting to show, but overall, much of the landscape remains green. White ash is deep purple and many bottomland species like walnut, silver maple, hackberry, and green ash have yellow color showing. Bottomland areas and edges are dropping leaves as well. Sumac and ivy are bright oranges and reds and hard maples are starting to change in urban areas. Peak viewing is expected to be reached later this week, and continue through at least the middle of next week.
