indianola-3

The Indianola football team entered Week 8’s game at Waukee with the opportunity to clinch the outright title in Class 4A District 6 with a win. Those hopes would not come to fruition as the Indians were stymied 42-7 in a game aired live on 94.3 KNIA.

After the teams traded punts to start the game, Waukee went on a 16-play drive in the closing stages of the first quarter and capped it off with a one-yard QB sneak by Minnesota State-Mankato commit Mitch Randall. That made it 7-0 at the end of the first.

The floodgates opened in the second quarter, as the Warriors scored four touchdowns in a three and a half minute timespan to go up 35-0 with 4:59 until half. Indianola would later respond with a two-yard direct snap run by Kael Kolarik to make it 35-7 with 1:48 until half. The quick strike offense of Waukee flew down the field in just over a minute to make it 42-7 at halftime. That proved to be all the Warriors would need to seal the win, as both teams went scoreless in the second half, which saw a running clock for its entirety. Indians coach Eric Kluver was happy with his team’s start on defense, but says they just couldn’t keep up with the talent of Waukee.

Indianola was held to just 170 total yards in the game, only 22 of which came on the ground, while Waukee racked up 399 yards. The Warriors improve to 5-3 overall and 4-0 in district play. They have the inside track to a district title, only needing a win at Johnston next week to seal it. Indianola is now 5-3 overall and 3-1 in the district. The district title hopes are slim, but not completely out of the picture. A win next week over Des Moines East and a Johnston win over Waukee would set up a three-way tie, to be broken by final RPI. Indianola will return home to host the Scarlets to close out the regular season next week.
