Despite blustery conditions today, the leaves are reaching their peak for the annual autumn color change in south central Iowa. According to the most recent Iowa DNR Fall Colors Report, oak trees are starting to turn, white ash is deep purple, and bottomland species such as walnut, silver maple, and hackberry are yellow and falling. Color is also starting in the hard maples – mostly oranges and reds. Hickory is golden yellow to deep rusty orange, and shrubs along forest edges are reds and purples.
