The Pella Community can support those who have served in the military on Veteran’s Day again this year. Jefferson Intermediate School welcomes all veterans and active-duty service members to a celebration in conjunction with American Legion Post 89 from 10:30 to 11 a.m. on November 11th. Elementary students will sing patriotic songs, read poetry, and honor all who have served in the military. Central College’s Central RED Society presents “Armistice Day: Remembering World War I” by Mark Barloon, senior lecturer of history. The event is set for 5:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 11, in the Dave and Ardie Sutphen Common Room in Graham Annex. Dinner is $15 and a cash bar will be available. The presentation will offer a brief examination of World War I, with emphasis on the new and modern aspects of the fighting. It will conclude with a look at ways in which participants commemorated their sacrifices in the war, including poems, poppies, monuments and music. Barloon has been teaching at Central for 17 years. His area of expertise is American military history, with an emphasis on the Civil War. Those wishing to attend must be members of Central RED, which is a $20 annual fee, and no affiliation with the college is required to join the society.
