Democratic Party presidential candidate Tom Steyer made campaign stops in Warren and Marion County last week as part of a statewide tour. Steyer held a student roundtable at Simpson College on Friday afternoon, then visited Peace Tree Brewing Company in Knoxville Saturday morning. Steyer tells KNIA News despite this area of Iowa voting heavily Republican in 2016, he thinks their concerns are valid and he wants to work with them to find a solution.
“I’ll never write off Republican voters, and I never write off American citizens. As far as I am concerned, Republicans in 2016 were reflecting something that I think is true. They thought that the government had abandoned them, that the government didn’t care about them, and kind of disrespected them, and they were looking for a solution to that problem. And I thought they came up with the wrong solution, I honestly think that Mr. Trump has been an unsuccessful, incompetent, and criminal president, but there is at no point am I disrespecting the people that voted for him because I think their concerns were real, valid, and intelligent.”
Other stops included Des Moines, Ottumwa, Fairfield, and West Burlington.
