The Knoxville Police Department is trying to find new and innovative ways to help fight crime in the city. The department has announced the creation of the Knoxville Community Camera Program. If residents have a surveillance camera, a doorbell camera, or any other type of video or photography device on or near your home or business and would like to share footage with the department they are encouraged to register their device with the Community Camera Program. Participation 100% is voluntary and at no time are participants obligated to share their footage with the department. Chief Dan Losada tells KNIA/KRLS News more and more people in Knoxville and across the country have been installing security cameras at their homes. Losada says law enforcement has found the cameras can be a valuable resource when crime occurs in the area in which a camera is located. The department is not asking for remote access to your cameras, only to engage in a partnership to help decrease crime in Knoxville. Using this information when a crime occurs, the department will know the location of nearby video cameras and will be able to collect any related evidence to follow up on leads. The City of Knoxville Police Department will only contact registered camera owners if a criminal incident occurs within the vicinity of the respective security camera and if the officers think the footage would assist in the investigation.
