Voters in Pella have selected the next leaders in the city among four contested City Council races.

Don DeWaard will serve as the next mayor of Pella for the retiring Jim Mueller. DeWaard ran against current Ward 3 Councilmember Bruce Schiebout, with DeWaard receiving 1611 votes to Bruce’s 651. Schiebout will remain on council for two more years, having the option to run again in his own ward in 2021.

Calvin Bandstra appears to be the next Ward 2 councilmember, defeating incumbent Harold Van Stryland 227-207. Robin Pfalzgraf received 155 votes and Nicolle Picray 88 in the four-way race.

Dave Hopkins received 279 votes to Bill Harkins’ 48 to become the next ward four councilmember, replacing the retiring Larry Peterson.

The At-Large Race between Tony Bokhoven and Liz Terborg Sporrer is too close to call, as the incumbent Bokhoven trails challenger Sporrer by eight votes, with approximately two dozen absentee ballots yet to be counted. Third challenger Chris Meyers received 329 votes.

Pella School Board Members Timothy Tripp, Gary Coppock, and Annette Smith all will continue serving in their seats running unopposed, with Tripp receiving 2019 votes, Coppock 1952, and Smith 1896. The Pella School District’s Proposition OP, which declares the district’s intent in spending sales tax revenue through a Revenue Purpose Statement, passed by a 1909 to 295 margin.

All vote tallies are preliminary in nature and will not become official until approved by the Marion County Board of Supervisors on November 12th.
