The Simpson football team traveled to Loras Saturday afternoon in search of their first win in over a month, but fell to the Duhawks 38-20, as aired on 94.3 KNIA. The Storm forced a Loras punt on the opening drive, and Simpson drove down and scored in their first possession, capped off by a 10-yard pass from Tanner Krueger to Sam Bartlett to make it 7-0. The duo connected again later in the quarter, this time from 17 yards out to make it 14-0 Simpson.
Loras answered early in the second, but the big play of the day for Simpson was a third Krueger to Bartlett connection, a 70-yard touchdown that put Bartlett in the Simpson record books with 15 receiving touchdowns in a single season.
Loras responded with two more touchdowns to take a 21-20 lead. Simpson had a chance to take the lead into the halftime break with a 43-yard field goal, but the Duhawks called all three of their timeouts in a row with two seconds until halftime. That iced kicker Zach Krieder, and it remained a one-point Loras lead.
Turnovers were a major factor in the second half, as Loras tacked on 17 more points in the second half and held Simpson scoreless for the 38-20 final.
Tanner Krueger finished 25-42 for 392 yards, three touchdowns and four interceptions. Sam Bartlett had eight catches for 148 yards and three scores. Joe Meyer was the leading rusher with 40 yards. Michael Connor led defensively with 14 tackles.
Simpson falls to 4-5 overall and 3-4 in the American Rivers Conference. They’ll close their season and celebrate Senior Day next Saturday, hosting Luther.
