Wreaths Across America is asking the Knoxville community for help recognizing veterans this holiday season. Each December on National Wreaths Across America Day, volunteers coordinate wreath-laying ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetery, as well as at more than 1,600 additional locations in all 50 U.S. states, at sea and abroad. Knoxville’s Graceland Cemetery is one of only 16 cemeteries in Iowa that takes part in the annual tradition. Marla Suter with Wreaths Across America tells KNIA/KRLS News there are 252 graves the organization is trying to find sponsors for so that each grave can receive a wreath. It costs $15 to sponsor a wreath and residents can sponsor a wreath by going to the Wreaths Across America website at www.wreathsacrossamerica.org and selecting the Graceland Cemetery Knoxville Iowa location. Anyone can sponsor as many wreaths as they choose with the sponsorship deadline of Monday, December 2nd. Suter says residents can also make a cash donation by dropping off cash or check to the donation jar at the Knoxville VFW Post 3519. She says the wreaths are live balsam fir wreaths from Maine that come with a red bow. Suter says local veterans groups as well as volunteers will place the wreaths at Graceland Cemetery on National Wreaths Across America Day on Saturday, December 14th at 11 a.m. Following the placing of the wreaths a military ceremony will be held at the Veteran’s Plot at noon.
