Indianola Middle School students have been learning more about programming in their computer science classes through Project Lead The Way. The education courses have included creating apps and writing programs, through a series of example applications and problem solving. David Dubczak teaches the course, and tells KNIA News the basic skills these students are learning now in middle school is an enormous building block for the future.
“There is almost no career field that is not being impacted by computer science. So having this knowledge, whether or not they know that at this point being 13 or 14 year old, having this knowledge and this skillset is going to be able to impact them in a career field in the future. Even if they go into a career field where they need a tool to create a problem, but the tool doesn’t exist yet, they have the mindset of being able to create the tool, and that will help them.”
Dubczak also said fields not traditionally related to computer science such as farming or agriculture are being drastically improved by the expansion of this skillset. For more information on the Indianola Middle School students learning to code, a future In Depth with Dr. Bob Leonard will air on KNIA.
