The Pella City Council decided to delay ongoing infrastructure work downtown at Policy and Planning following their regular meeting Tuesday. Assistant City Administrator Corey Goodenow says Phase II of the Oost Poort water and sewer upgrades will be pushed back to the 2021 construction season due to two key factors: financing and timing. Goodenow says the challenges come from an engineer’s estimate put the anticipated work more than $400,000 over previous projections after a thorough survey was completed. Additionally, he says the city was not prepared to quickly replace nearly 80 parking spots that would be lost at the corner of Washington and East 1st, as they would be unable to complete new parking spaces near the Old Second Christian Reformed Church in time to make the project more feasible. Phase I of the Oost Poort Alley upgrades will likely be complete by the end of the month.
