In nearly identical fashion, the North Polk girls and Pella High boys earned victories in a non-conference doubleheader last night as heard live on KRLS2 at www.kniakrls.com.

In each game, the winning team started out with a double-digit spurt, slowed down a bit in the second quarter, then blew it open with a monster third quarter.  The end results were the Comet girls beating the Lady Dutch 61-34, and the Little Dutch earning a 97-69 victory.

In the nightcap, Pella burst out to a 15-0 advantage, but saw its lead dwindle to just 47-41 at intermission.  Then a 31-15 third quarter put the game on ice. Coach Derek Schulte says that it was a matter of finding the right tempo on offense.

“We got off to such a great start that all of a sudden everything looks like it’s open, and we started making a lot of one or two pass shots, and playing really fast.  We want to play fast, but we were almost out of control fast. It’s like we were in fast forward mode for a while. In the second half, we were able to settle down and play our style, which is still in transition, but I thought Logan (Shetterly) did a great job of directing traffic.”

Logan Shetterly led all scorers with 26 points, John Oltman added 17, including 14 in the first quarter, and Treyton Sturgeon chipped in 14 points in his first action since an ACL tear in the season opener last year.  The Little Dutch start the season 1-0.

Meanwhile, the Lady Dutch fell to 1-1.  Bailey Van Voorst scored 9 points, all in the second half, and Jasmine Namminga nabbed 10 rebounds.

Both the Pella boys and girls will open Little Hawkeye Conference play on Friday at home against Pella Christian.
