Pella went 2-0 at the Knoxville Wrestling Triangular on Thursday night routing Nevada 66-6 and winning a hard-fought match over rival Knoxville 43-25. The match with Knoxville went back-and-forth until the upper weights where Pella closed it out winning the final four bouts from the 170 pound weight class to 285. Pella Coach Jay Pike told KRLS Sports his guys were able to finish matches and get key bonus points when needed.
Pike:
“It was a great battle between two teams, and our boys kept fighting and had a never give up attitude. Guys that had close decisions where it was a decision turned to a major or a major turned into a pin we had guys capitalize on bonus points and that was a big deal.”
For Knoxville, the Panthers were able to beat Nevada pulling away during the middle weights to win 42-28. Coach Doug Hatch said it came down to being sometimes one move from winning or losing an individual bout in the Pella match.
Hatch:
“I saw a lot of things we can go back and improve upon. We have some freshmen, and young guys that are either first year wrestlers or haven’t wrestled in a couple years. They’re still getting that feel down, and the farther they went the better they got.”
The Nevada match was marred by an injury to Knoxville 195 pounder Ben Brewster. Brewster severely injured his leg and was taken to the hospital. Hatch told KRLS sports is looked bad when it happened. Knoxville will head to the Nodaway Valley Invitational on Saturday while Pella heads to Montezuma for a meet on Saturday.
