The Pella and Pella Christian communities came together for a cause at the first of two basketball matchups between the high schools Friday night. Dollars for Scholars held a pork supper prior to tip off to collect funds for their honors scholarship programs, in partnership with the Pella Hy-Vee.
Pella boys and girls basketball players also called out to their families and the community to collect food and supplies for the Pella Community Food Shelf in friendly competition. Pella Vice Principal and Head Boys Basketball Coach Derek Schulte says service is an emphasis at the high school, and in the spirit of friendly competition, both the Lady Dutch and boys were able to make a difference.
The first of two Marion County Bank shootout events featured students shooting layups, free throws, three pointers and half court shots to earn a donation from the bank. For the first event, a donation of $3,175 will be made, which is split evenly between the two schools. Since 2007, more than $100,000 has been raised as part of the event.
