National Wreaths Across America Day is Saturday. Each December on National Wreaths Across America Day, volunteers coordinate wreath-laying ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetery, as well as at more than 1,600 additional locations in all 50 U.S. states, at sea and abroad. Knoxville’s Graceland Cemetery is one of only 16 cemeteries in Iowa that takes part in the annual tradition. Local veterans groups as well as volunteers will place 252 wreaths on grave stones at the cemetary on Saturday at 11 a.m. Marla Suter with Wreaths Across America tells KNIA/KRLS News she would love to see people in the community come out and support the veterans on Saturday. Suter says when the group is laying the wreaths it’s always great to hear people pass the cemetery in their cars and honk as they pass. She says as they lay the wreaths they say the veterans name. Remember, honor and teach are the foundations of Wreaths Across America according to Suter and she says as long as people are speaking the individuals name they are never forgotten. Following the placing of the wreaths a military ceremony will be held at the Veteran’s Plot at noon.
