The Pella Christian basketball teams found themselves on the opposite ends of the spectrum in Monroe, splitting with PCM in a girls-boys doubleheader Monday night, with the PCM girls winning 55-31 and the Eagles boys dominating 79-41.
Pella Christian had no trouble firing out of the gates in the boys contest, scoring the game’s first 19 points in 5:40 of game time. The Eagles never looked back, with every member of the varsity roster scoring at least one point and keeping the Mustangs out of it for the duration.
Head Coach Larry Hessing says with a busy week ahead and after an emotional win Friday night, it was a great opportunity to show off the team’s depth and get plenty of players quality minutes on the floor.
“Coming into tonight, that’s what I feared the most, was that our guys were not passed the euphoria of Friday night a little bit, and that they were just gonna not be ready to play, but they proved me wrong,” he says. “They weren’t overly amped or hyped up, but they did exactly what they needed to do and came out strong and it was fun to see.”
Dan Jungling led the Eagles with 15 points and four three-pointers and eight different Eagles hit shots from deep. Pella Christian improves to 3-0 and hosts three-time defending 1A state champions Grandview Christian tonight, while the 2-1 Mustangs boys try to pick up the pieces against North Polk at home this evening.
The Eagles girls were dominated by PCM in the opener of the twinbill, with the Mustangs leading wire-to-wire in dominating fashion. Despite a 16 point, 16 rebound performance from Allison Van Gorp, it was all Mustangs, led by senior Regan Freland, who scored 20 points, nabbed five steals, and collected five rebounds. Lilly Baird added 13 and Celese Wagaman scored 9, with each hitting three shots from beyond-the-arc. PCM improves to 3-1 and hosts No. 2 in 3A North Polk — hear both the PCM girls and boys games against the Comets live on the KRLS3 stream this evening. Pella Christian’s girls fall to 0-5 and are off until they join the boys for a doubleheader against Norwalk at home Friday.
