The PCM Mustang girls and boys basketball teams split a pair of games against North Polk Tuesday as the Mustang girls fell 60-27 and the boys won 50-46. In the girls contest the Mustangs would fall behind quickly to the number two ranked Comets 24-2 after one quarter of play. PCM would only muster ten points in the second quarter and would trail 48-12 at the half. In the second have of action the Mustangs would play better defensively only allowing 12 points the entire second half but the second half effort was too little too late as the Mustangs fell 60-27. The Mustangs were led by senior Regan Freland who scored 16 of the Mustangs 27 points.
In the boys game the Mustangs and Comets battled back and forth with the Mustangs leading 12-8 after one quarter of play but North Polk would lead 28-25 at the half. PCM would come out firing in the third quarter and would lead 39-30 entering the fourth quarter. The Mustangs would make things interesting as they would struggle from the free throw line late in the game which allowed the Comets to come within two points with four seconds left in the contest. PCM Head Coach Fred Lorensen tells KNIA/KRLS Sports despite the poor shooting from the line, he was proud of how resilient his team was. Lorensen says sometimes you’re going to have games like that where shooting is difficult and he was proud of how his guys handled it. Free throws by junior Grant Landgrebe would make the game a two possession game and give the Mustangs the 50-46 win. Both the girls and boys Mustang squads will next face Gilbert in another Heart of Iowa Conference matchup on Thursday.
