Last year there were an estimated 251,700 toy-related injuries treated in hospital emergency departments in the United States, according to the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission. Pella Regional Health Center is reminding the public to select safe and age appropriate toys this holiday season.

Before you buy a toy:
· Read all instructions and warnings on the box.
· Make sure the toy is appropriate for the age of the child.
· Do not buy toys with sharp or rigid points, spikes, rods, or dangerous edges.
· Look for the letters “ASTM.” This designation means the toy meets the national safety standards set by ASTM International.
· Do not buy toys that shoot or include parts that fly off.

Before letting children play with toys:
· Inspect toys for safe, sturdy construction.
· Teach children how to use the toy.
· Fix or throw away broken toys.

Other toy safety tips:
· Keep young children away from toys meant for older children.
· Watch children while they are playing with toys.
· Store toys in tubs or containers afterwards to avoid injuries or falls.
· Make sure children use the right protection for sports.
