The City of Indianola currently takes advantage of a program hosted by the Iowa League of Cities to help train newly elected council members to be ready to participate in a government position. Heather Hulen and Gwen Schroder were recently sworn in as Indianola City Council members and will participate in their first meeting in January, and City Manager Ryan Waller tells KNIA News the candidates have hit the ground running already.
“They’ll go through some of the basics such as the budget, what the responsibilities of an elected official is, policy vs administrative, and who does what and why it’s important to define those roles. They also go through some of the legal items that elected officials have to work with and be aware of, such as something as simple as posting a meeting.”
