With several state legislative priorities for the Governor and Republican party passed in 2019 and a coming election year, State Senator Ken Rozenboom doesn’t expect heavy action on bills in the upcoming legislative session. One area both the Iowa House and Senate will explore and that fits into Rozenboom’s Natural Resources committee chair role is a potential increase in sales tax to fund conservation efforts and environmental initiatives. In 2010, Iowans voted to authorize the state to raise the sales tax and use the proceeds to benefit natural resource protection efforts. Rozenboom says there’s no Republican support for a straight increase, and for that funding to be approved, there would have to be a tax decrease elsewhere. Stay tuned to 92.1 KRLS for more details about the upcoming legislative session, which begins in January.
