One of the areas the Iowa House will likely focus on in the upcoming legislative session relates to assistance for communities attempting to expand broadband internet access. District 79 Representative Dustin Hite is entering the second year of his first term representing Pella, New Sharon, and Oskaloosa, and says he’s helping to draft legislation that could assist those in rural Iowa access faster, more reliable internet.
“That’s probably the biggest thing I’ve been working on in the offseason, trying to put together as good and as comprehensive of a package, and hopefully one we can move through both chambers and get on the Governor’s desk,” Hite says. “It’s not a fix all, but certainly would make a huge difference in rural broadband access.”
Hite says he’s seen in his own district there are several methods that could increase accessibility, whether it’s the private industry approach in Oskaloosa through MCG, or the current process the City of Pella is undertaking to establish a public utility. Hite says high-speed internet access is critical for all Iowans, and he’s hopeful the legislature will take more steps this year to make sure all residents have the speed and reliability they need. The 2020 Iowa Legislative Session begins on January 13th.
