Pella Christian High School will celebrate its first and greatest state sports championship team.

This season marks the 30th anniversary since the Eagles boys basketball team ran the table to become an undefeated state champion, the first of three titles in a four year run unmatched by most teams in Iowa high school basketball history.

Jerry Nikkel was the head coach of those championship teams, including the 25-0 Eagles in 1990, and says community is invited to celebrate as the documentary “Soar Mighty Eagles” on Thursday, January 16th at the Vermeer Auditorium, with doors opening at 6 p.m.

“I was so flabbergasted when I saw the first announcement that the video will be released at 7…and the doors will be at 6, and I’m thinking, ‘what are you thinking about, are we going to fill the auditorium for this?, but no, this is wide open and we’re hoping that a lot of the fans and people who were involved with it way back will show up, because I think it will be exciting.”

A tribute to the team, with all members returning, will be held during the Friday, January 17th doubleheader against Oskaloosa.
