The Marion County Board of Supervisors met in special session Monday. The meeting was held to discuss and take action as necessary regarding a proposed Courthouse Elevator Project. According to the supervisors, the current elevator which was installed at the courthouse in 1974 will no longer be ADA compliant as May 1st, 2020. Due to the noncompliance issue, the board approved the authorization of Courthouse Facilities Director Chris Nesteby to proceed with the bid process for the projected new elevator. The new elevator would be constructed on the south side of the courthouse, just south of the courthouse rotunda and is estimated to cost approximately $1.3 million. According to Nesteby, the project would begin sometime in the spring and could take approximately eight months to complete. Due to the projected construction, daily courthouse business could be impacted so the board advised department heads to form a committee and come up with a “worse case scenario” plan to keep county departments functioning throughout the construction period. Bids for the project are expected to be returned by Thursday, January 30th. Following the return of bids, the board is expected to hold another special meeting to discuss future implementation of the plan for the project.
