Over the past few months residents in Knoxville have probably noticed the construction at the Knoxville City Parking Lot across from Knoxville City Hall. The construction is due to the solar canopy that is being installed over the parking lot. The solar canopy project, which was first approved by the city in the fall of 2018, is nearing its completion according to Knoxville City Manager Aaron Adams. Adams tells KNIA/KRLS News the canopy will be able to power Knoxville Fire and Rescue, Knoxville Police Department, Knoxville Public Library and Knoxville City Hall once completed. He says residents should know the canopy did not cost the city anything upfront and that it will save the community money over the long haul. Adams says concerns have arisen about the canopy hanging over parts of parking spots on Third Street to which he says a gutter system will be installed to help limit runoff onto vehicles parked below.
