As the calendar has now flipped to 2020, people are reminded the federal Real ID act will go into effect on October 1st 2020. After the October 1st deadline, residents must have an officially-recognized ID card to fly commercially or gain entry onto federal property. Drivers licenses which are compliant with Real ID resemble a normal license; the only difference is a yellow star insignia imprinted on the card, which tells authorities the bearer’s identification has been verified. To obtain a Real ID certain documentation must be provided to establish your identity. Forms of documentation include a valid passport or an authenticated birth certificate, a valid Social Security card, a W-2 or a 1099 form with the Social Security number on it and a bill or bank statement with your local address. Marion County Treasurer Michaela Bigaouette encourages people to bring required documents while they are renewing their license but if they are unable, they can always obtain a Real ID at a later time for $10.
